President and Mrs. Monroe shared over 40 years as husband and wife, many of them at their estate they called Highland. Perhaps one of their happiest days was when their eldest daughter, Eliza, was married at their Highland homestead.

A picturesque and historic house with adjacent gardens, Ash Lawn-Highland offers unique locations for both wedding ceremonies and receptions. Each party is provided optimal privacy and flexibility. We encourage you to welcome your guests to Ash Lawn-Highland as James and Elizabeth Monroe welcomed theirs.

Blue Ridge Yard – Secluded by boxwood gardens, this idyllic yard offers a stunning view of the neighboring mountains. Combined with the charm of the white farm fence in the background, this yard shows off the beauty of the Charlottesville countryside.
John’s Garden – This gorgeously groomed, floral accented, formal garden backs up to Highland, the historic home of President James Monroe. If you are searching for a ceremony with a historic setting, look no further!
Peacock Yard – Bordered with small boxwoods, this lush lawn is shaded by large ash trees that create a natural arch. The most spacious yard on the property, it is the ideal option for larger ceremonies.
Theater Yard – This charming area unites shade and beauty as well as offering a spectacular view of a 300 year old oak tree. Positioned between the boxwood gardens and a Victorian house addition, this yard is perfect for both cocktail hours and ceremonies.
Event Barn - Designed in the style of a historic barn on site, the Event Barn has two floors—a lower level encompassing a historic stone wall, and an upper level complete with a high raftered ceiling preserving the rustic farmhouse atmosphere. Both levels offer picturesque views of pastures and mountains. This indoor facility is heated and air conditioned. Seats as many as 175 for dinner on the upper level and as many as 150 for dinner on the lower level.
Hilltop Pavilion - A covered outdoor facility, the Hilltop Pavilion fuses rustic charm with an exquisite panoramic view of the surrounding mountain landscape. The raftered ceiling acts as a canvas allowing each couple to individualize their celebration – the result being that no two receptions are identical. Seats as many as 250 people for dinner. on
I couldn't imagine a better place to host my summer wedding - Ash Lawn offered beautiful outdoor scenery and a rustic venue that was perfect for my tastes, and my history-loving fiance was thrilled to have the wedding at this historic venue. The event coordinator, Brittany, was not only enthusiastic but extremely quick and professional in all communication, answering the myriad questions I had about the venue. All the staff was very kind and helpful each time I visited the venue beforehand. The … outdoor Pavilion is simple yet offers amazing views of the Virginia mountains, and was a wonderful place to host my BBQ themed wedding dinner. There was plenty of space for my 240 guests under the Pavilion, and the grounds around it provided ample space for children to play, adults to mingle, and extra dance floor when it got a little toasty under the Pavilion (it was about 100 degrees that day, and while there are fans in there, it was really hot and humid!) I would highly recommend Ash Lawn for Charlottesville brides seeking a breathtakingly beautiful venue! Read More
This was a very awesome vendor to work with and such a beautiful venue. Our contact person switched several months before our wedding date, but Britney was even better to work with. She was easily accessible, could answer all of our questions, and the venue was awesome - they let us bring in outside catering, were flexible with when we could bring other vendors into and out of the venue, and already had an ABC license. Would highly recommend!
Ash Lawn is a beautiful property with a very accommodating staff. Many options for ceremony/cocktail hour sites all on the grounds. We had out wedding there at the end of August and could not have been happier with the way it turned out.
BEAUTIFUL, intimate, historic venue. Each garden/yard created a new space for guests to enjoy and explore at different points throughout the evening. Truly the venue of my dreams. That being said, we did have some issues with the event planning team being less than accommodating at times. There were several things that had been promised to us at the time of booking that were not done by the wedding (painting the ceiling of the pavilion, new restrooms in the pavilion, new lighting along the … brick paths). We had been told that we would be able to store much of our alcohol, decor, etc in the pavilion overnight prior to the wedding, however, they locked the storage room prematurely on the night of the rehearsal dinner and refused to give us a set of keys. As a result, multiple other trips had to be made out to the venue the day of the wedding. Additionally, Ash Lawn is very weather-dependent. There is no great rain plan. The indoor "barn" had the potential to be a gorgeous indoor space, but it instead looks like a middle school gymnasium. Would have appreciated if the pavilion had been painted, however, I know funding is limited as the venue is publicly funded. Fortunately, we were incredibly lucky with the weather, and everything worked out beautifully in the end. Read More
