About Shutter and Sound Films

Shutter & Sound

Scheduling Manager

Hi! Courtney here (that's me on the left!). Shutter and Sound is the brainchild of renowned wedding videographer Ryan Geldermann. Ryan began his wedding videography career in 2010 in Los Angeles and quickly became recognized as one of the top videographers in the U.S.. After relocating to DC and still receiving countless inquiries from all corners of the country, Ryan decided to recruit and train a few talented friends so he could continue offering the quality wedding videography he’s known for in SoCal and eventually over 10 cities. Shutter and Sound is a very small group of filmmakers dedicated to turning your big day into a work of art.

Unlike similar companies, we do not book every couple that inquires, then scramble to hire random contractors to film those weddings. While that may result in more revenue for those companies, it also ultimately results in unpredictable and inconsistent quality. Instead, we partner with a very select few videographers that shoot all of our weddings. They are trained in our filming and editing style so you (and we) can be confident that what you see on our website is what you will receive. We are a tight-knit family obsessed with quality control and customer service.

I can’t say enough what an amazing job Shutter and Sound did with the videography at our wedding!! I will forever be grateful to our videographers Ben and AJ for their amazing skills, professionalism, and just all around presence at our wedding, they were a whole vibe!! The speed that they would move between rooms, get people mic’d up when needed, and always got the perfect shot was just uncanny! When I tell you that the second they introduced themselves and were ready to start rolling they were already a part of the group and made everyone feel extremely comfortable, they were a blast to work with! They worked incredibly well with all of the other vendors, whom they had never met before, especially working so closely with our photographer. They all worked together to get us the absolute best shots and we could not be more grateful! I received my highlight video, and I cannot stop watching it! It was everything I could have asked for and more! Every moment was beautifully captured and I can’t imagine having chosen anyone other than Shutter and Sound as our videographer! The process from booking to the day of the wedding was also such a breeze. Can not recommend enough!

We mainly corresponded with Julian and worked with two videographers (mainly Mike). 5/5 stars. 10/10 review. If you are someone (like me) who researches all the available options, checks ratings, read reviews, sorts based on pricing, communication, availability, work product examples, etc. then shutter and sound is for you. We had an incredible experience and would highly recommend. Most importantly their biggest strength is consistent and clear communication. Question answering and help leading up to the wedding is a plus. Also, both videographers (Mike in particular), were absolutely AWESOME. Seriously- the direction Mike gave us, his attention to detail and awareness of time constraints/schedule were phenomenal. It was so much fun to follow his directions and execute the ideas for the shots he had. He made it super fun and enjoyable. He also worked fantastically alongside our photographer and other vendors. The Shutter and Sound team was just fricken awesome. Upbeat, quick with ideas, and just forceful enough to get shots quickly without being too much. They were so encouraging and honestly made us feel like superstars. Came to our house, got all kinds of shots, getting ready process, going to the venue, at the venue, ceremony, reception, guests, dancing, everything. They moved around effortlessly, and with a smile. Getting the post ceremony and sunset shots with them was probably the most carefree relaxing period of the event. They respected our time, were excellent at their job, were flexible yet helpful, communicated clearly and frequently, and were fun to work with. UPDATE: Actual video: https://vimeo.com/834866048?signuptrue Almost a year after our wedding and my wife and I still regularly watch out wedding video. I know I'm biased but I think its the best video ever created lol. Shutter and Sound gave us something we will cherish forever. If you are on the fence (as we were) if just a photographer will suffice, trust me the video is a completely different thing and specifically the product we received is invaluable to us now - we got the extended highlight or whatever (around 9 minutes). We honestly watch the video way more than the pictures because it captures the moment so well, and is beautifully edited. Idk what it costs now (our wedding was May 2023) but if you book with Shutter and Sound, if it is anything like ours, what you get will be worth 10x the cost.

Shutter & Sound did a fantastic job! They were very easy to work with throughout the entire planning process. Both of our videographers showed up on time the day of the wedding. They made us feel comfortable behind the camera and worked well with our photography team. Throughout the day, we hardly noticed they were there because they did such a great job of blending into the background, yet captured all our important moments. Now to our wedding video...it is AMAZING! We could not be more happy with how our video turned out. Our family and friends continuously comment how incredible it is! Choose Shutter & Sound...you won't regret it!

We recently used Shutter and Sound Films for our wedding in December and I would feel remiss if I didn't warn other brides about our experience. We purchased 10 hours of service, raw footage, and the edited highlight video and teaser. Our wedding ended at 1:00AM and during the planning of the timeline, they wanted to initially leave the wedding at 11:00PM, which would mean they would miss our cake cutting and a lot of dancing time. We explained that getting ready footage was less important to us than dancing footage and they would only compromise to stay until 11:30PM. While the highlight video and teaser were definitely beautiful products, the raw footage, which is over 5 hours of footage, included about 7 minutes of dancing total and only captured about 4 songs from different angles and completely disregarded what we asked for and expressed to the team was most important to us. Mind you, there's about 20 minutes of a blank wall and the DJ setting up the ceremony space, but only 7 minutes of dancing, and the same moments repeated over and over again just from different angles. There were many spontaneous fun moments that happened that we will never get to watch and relive. We are Italian and our culture is very important to us and when asked why a traditional song was not captured, which was one of the first songs played, they told us "it's played at every Italian wedding" and they didn't feel the need to capture it, which is extremely disrespectful to say to a bride and groom, and they also used the excuse that we didn't indicate to them exactly what time it would be played. While it may be played at "every Italian wedding," this was our wedding and a special day that only happens once. Additionally, you can't plan out the exact minute any certain song will be played and one would think a seasoned videographer would prepare for an element of spontaneity and be ready to capture moments as they happen. Also, they did not capture my Grandmother being introduced as "the introductions happened too quickly" and "they didn't know where she was" even though she was written down on the list of people being introduced and I informed them she is elderly and couldn't walk out, but would be introduced at her seat. Also, there was no direct communication with the actual videographers ahead of the wedding, only communication with a coordinator via email. Having at least a phone call as every other wedding vendor does prior to the wedding could perhaps prevent issues like these in the future as you’re able to talk through every thing in a more personal way. These excuses are frankly unacceptable and as a bride you should be able to trust the vendors you're working with on such an important day will take what's important to you into account and treat you with the respect you deserve, therefore I cannot in good conscience recommend this vendor to any bride despite how pretty the final video looked, I'm sure there are other vendors with just as beautiful of a final product, but who will capture what you ask them to capture.

    Response from vendor4/22/2024
We are very saddened and disappointed to see this review posted before we had finished working through this problem via email. Given your extremely positive reaction to the majority of your deliverables, we do feel this review may be misleading for future couples, and it is our responsibility to them to reply. Obviously the 20 minute shot of a wall was simply a camera that was not turned off -- to imply that we intentionally filmed a wall or that we're incompetent because we didn't turn a camera off is a bit disingenuous. We are extremely transparent about the timing of the day we require to produce our style videos and in our 6-week email did mention the ideal timing. As you expressed that the reception was important to you, we were happy to compromise and extend. The 6-week check-in email where this is explained also notes the reception events we consider “main events” that get recorded in their entirety, and no issue was brought up with these at that time. The contract further notes that other cultural dances and events are NOT considered “main events” but can be recorded fully and added to the multi-camera edit for an additional fee if requested prior to the wedding and that raw footage is not a substitute for a multi-camera edit chapter. You opted not to purchase this. For our clients with specific and important cultural reception elements, those are typically noted in the pre-wedding survey or specifically timed out in the timeline during the evening for photo and video's benefit, but it was not listed anywhere.w In addition to that, there was no mention of important cultural elements specific to the wedding in our Getting To Know You survey which means our videographers can only use their best judgment. Despite this, we truly empathize and understand that the elements that were not captured are important to you and their absence from the raw footage is a disappointment. We spoke via email about a possible substitute for Cella Lune and are still happy to work with you on that if you change your mind. However, we feel that our explanation has been mischaracterized here. - We clarified that we couldn't confirm for sure why it was not captured as it wasn't mentioned until months after the wedding and the videographers couldn't recall for certain, but that it is not a song we often receive requests to capture in particular. This was not worded as thoughtfully as it could have been and for that we are sincerely sorry. - The videographers explained that they did not feel they had adequate notice of the standing introduction for your grandmother and weren't made aware of where she would be, and that things happened too quickly for them to get the cameras angled and prepared. We agree this is unfortunate and while videographers are human and errors do happen we will be reviewing this incident to see what can be improved going forward. - While we don't require a call prior to the wedding, your lead videographer's number was provided prior to the day of the event and we are always happy to arrange a call at the client's request. We were happy to refund the raw footage as it did not meet your expectations and hope this helps ease the frustration and disappointment somewhat, but mostly we hope that eventually you are able to look back fondly on the beautiful footage that was captured and the gorgeous edits we were able to create for you.
