6 Reasons to Get Married in Charleston

If you're wondering whether Charleston is the perfect wedding destination for your big day, there's no need to wonder! Charleston has something for every couple: breathtaking venues, tantalizing local fare, and plenty of attractions that fit with any bride's dream wedding. To prove it, we've rounded up a few of our favorite reasons to host your wedding in Charleston.

1. A Traveler's Dream

Charleston was recently dubbed the #2 "Best City in the World" by Conde Nast Traveler, and for good reason! Its perfect mix of rustic charm and chic style make the town feel like an escape. Your guests will have plenty to do and see over the course of your wedding weekend. "We have really, really great hotels. There's so much history and so much to see," says Stuart Howe of Pinnacle Weddings and Events. "You could spend a week here just touring around."

2. Destination Wedding Experts

Charleston has long been a favorite destination wedding location, which means the wedding vendors in the area — from planners to DJs to caterers — are used to working with out-of-town couples who may not be familiar with the city. Simply put, they've got what it takes to work together with long-distance couples. "It's a well-oiled machine," Stuart says. His company — and many other Charleston wedding vendors — offer online services to bridge the gap with couples planning destination weddings, making your planning process even smoother.

3. World-Class Cuisine

"Charleston is a small town, but it has a world-class food scene and a food culture all its own," says local wedding photographer Mackenzie Clark of The Click Chick Photography. The amazing food means two things for the to-be-wedded: First, on the big day, you can serve incredible locally inspired dishes, like shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, or frogmore stew. Plus, your welcome or rehearsal dinner can be at one of Charleston's many delicious eateries!

4. Beautiful Wedding Venues for Every Style

Whether you're having an intimate affair or a big bash, the perfect wedding venue exists for all kinds of weddings, and all of them are infused with charming Charleston style. "The venues here are ridiculously amazing," Stuart tells us. One of the sprawling plantations surrounding the city will make your wedding look like it belongs in The Notebook (which, unsurprisingly, was filmed at several plantations and sites around Charleston!). On the other hand, the city's seaside location means there are plenty of waterfront wedding locations, from nautical ceremonies on the beach to swanky receptions on a yacht. Of course, you can always find classic wedding locations like country clubs, hotels, estates, banquet halls, and even modern urban locations, all of which will offer you the best that Southern hospitality has to offer.

5. Historic Look, Modern Amenities

There's no doubt that Charleston is filled with rich history from the country's early days. In fact, the horse-drawn carriages, majestic Live Oaks, and 18th- and 19th-century mansions lining the streets look like they're straight out of a history book, making for plenty of eye-catching wedding photos. "Charleston is still a small town," Mackenzie tells us. "No building is built higher than the highest church steeple," which keeps the town's iconic, historic look alive. But the city's old style doesn't mean its amenities are out of date. "Charleston offers the best of all worlds — historic charm, antebellum architecture, amazing beaches, and mild weather," says Tanya Gurrieri of Salthouse Catering. "And local vendors have stepped up their game to offer world-class service for weddings." Many of the historic sites have stepped up their game too, with modern, renovated interiors, so you and your guests don't have to sacrifice convenience for style.

    6. Built-In Charm and Romance

All of those historic sites and lavish venues were made to be beautiful. "All of this makes our jobs easier with their built-in Southern charm," says Janice Clayton of Pretty Petals of Charleston. "We just add a little frosting with our floral designs." The natural beauty of Charleston's wedding venues speaks for itself, meaning you need less additional decor (which saves you time and money!). That's especially a bonus when you're coordinating a destination wedding. And don't forget about photos! "You can have photos with Live Oaks dripping with Spanish moss, or a marsh at sunset," Mackenzie says. "There are so many unique places to have an outdoor wedding."
