So, you’ve decided on a magical beach setting for your big day. First, congratulations! Weddings in the Florida Keys are naturally enchanting and can result in some of the most romantic of wedding photos, but beach photography can also pose some obstacles for any photographer. How can you guarantee that your photographer will be up to the task of capturing all the glory of your beach wedding? Here you will find some important factors to consider when choosing a Florida Keys wedding photographer.

First, you want to figure out what style of wedding photography you are most drawn to – do you like the flawless look of posed portraiture, or the carefree essence captured in a more photojournalist approach? To do this, take a look at the real Florida Keys weddings & "love" the ones you are most drawn to. Once you know which style you like, it’s time to narrow it down to a few potential photographers.

I always recommend setting up face-to-face interviews with potential photographers, for a couple of reasons. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy or formal – meeting at a local coffee shop is completely fine - but your Florida Keys wedding photographer will be one of - if not the most - personal vendors you hire, meaning you will spend more time one-on-one with your photographer than anyone else, so it definitely behooves you to make sure you “click” with him or her before signing on the dotted line. Sometimes representations of companies and individuals can be, let's just say, different, than what you will find in real life. Meeting in-person is a great way to gauge a potential photographer’s professionalism, appearance, personality, and general likeability!

During the interview, there are some key questions you need to ask in order to make sure that your photographer can live up to your expectations and handle the task of capturing your beautiful beach wedding.

  • First and foremost, ask if your photographer specializes in beach weddings and how many beach weddings he or she has in their portfolio.
  • Ensure that the photographer has availability on your date.
  • What is included in the package? Wedding photography cost can vary greatly, so it’s best to get this question out of the way up front to ensure it will fit your budget. Bridal portraiture, engagement session, videography, and the wedding album are all details to cover with a potential photographer.
  • How many hours are included in the package, and what type of charges will occur if your event runs long?
  • Will your photographer be bringing a second shooter and is that included in the price?
  • If you are having a destination wedding in the Florida Keys and are flying your photographer out, be sure to cover any additional costs that may be required. Hotel, food, and local transportation are all details that need to be discussed.
  • What are the post-production details? In other words, how soon will you receive your wedding photos, and in what form – digital, album, or a compilation? Will you own the rights to your photos?
  • Is your photographer familiar with your specific beach venue, and does he or she have creative ideas for where to take photos? Beach photography can be challenging in that many beaches don’t offer much in the way of “props” other than the obvious backdrop of the ocean, so a creative beach photographer can be especially important if your venue is more or less bare.
  • Is your photographer open to receiving a list of “must-have” photos – shots that you just can’t live without?
  • Ask to see a couple of full albums of beach weddings to get a better idea of the style, quality, and “eye” of each photographer you interview. (And of course, check out their Real Weddings on their Borrowed & Blue listing!)
  • Ask to see reviews from previous clients, preferably that went with the package you are considering, and also had weddings in the Florida Keys.
  • Ask your photographer how they will handle any potential weather issues, wind and rain specifically.
  • Ensure that your photographer has adequate equipment recommended for beach wedding photography. Some to inquire about include UV filters to reduce sun glare, a wide-angle lens to capture the expansiveness of the beach, camera casing for taking any in-water or near-water photos, and a lens hood to cut down on haziness.
  • Lastly, if you are planning on getting your feet wet in the ocean, make sure your photographer is comfortable with his or her camera being that close to water!

Once you’ve met with your top two or three potential photographers, it all comes down to making a decision! Use these questions, your budget, and your gut feeling to choose which wedding photographer in the Florida Keys is going to be best for your Big Day.
