From the darling bride...
We used photographs of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day as decorations around our guest book, and we were really inspired by the simplicity of their outfits and ceremonies. The focus was on the people, and we wanted to emulate that. Wedding planning today can easily become very overwhelming, and we both felt that a lot of the important aspects can get lost along the way. We decided to forego many things considered “traditional” these days – no wedding party, flower girls, wedding colors, or bouquet toss - and instead took a laid-back approach to plan a simple wedding with focus on a thoughtful and personal ceremony, and good food, drinks and music.
Our goal for the big day was to keep things simple, personal, and fun. We had a morning of yoga for me and surfing for the groom, followed by getting ready with our close friends. I had asked my closest girlfriends to be my “something blue” good luck charms, explaining they could wear any amount of blue they wanted, and coincidentally, they showed up in different blue dresses of a similar shade that was just beautiful! For my dress, I wanted to stay far away from the traditional strapless/poufy/sparkly dress that seems to be popular these days. It took a lot of searching to find something close to what I was looking for, and then Olivia was able to make changes to create a perfect dress for me. I was really happy with the way it turned out, and my husband loved it!
The stage at Tiber Canyon Ranch has an amazing view of Edna Valley, and we wanted to be framed by that view and the trees rather than stand beneath or in front of a big decorative altar. Since we did not have a wedding party, it was important to us to involve friends and family in a different way; a close friend officiated for us, both of our mothers did readings during the ceremony, we wrote our own vows, and then seven of friends/family stood and pronounced a wish for us at the close of our ceremony. Many of our guests remarked it was one of the most meaningful ceremonies they had attended, and that meant a lot to us because really, that’s what a wedding should be about.
We did not attempt many decorations, as Tiber Canyon is already such a beautiful and unique setting. However, we did decide on blue tablecloths and paper lanterns (simply because we both like blue). We are animal lovers so used little gold animal figurines as our table number holders, and we are big fans of succulents so used succulents as the centerpieces. Bonus-- the centerpieces made great thank you gifts for family and friends that helped with the wedding! Our florist was very creative and integrated olive tree branches around my bouquet and into the boutonnieres, which was a lovely and personal touch, given the location is an olive tree ranch. Our caterers were so wonderful in accommodating our wishes to have a humane and responsibly sourced menu with a lot of allergen - and animal-free dishes. Our favorite thing to eat is tacos – it’s our thing - so we had a taco bar, along with a variety of grilled dishes and assorted treats. Our DJ was able to make a kick-ass soundtrack throughout the evening based on a short list of our favorite artists, which I think also contributed to making our wedding very “us.” Overall, everything was delicious, beautiful and perfect!
My favorite moment of the day was when I was walking down the aisle and my husband turned to face me. We locked eyes, both smiled big and started tearing up. It is a moment I will forever cherish! A second favorite moment was during the last song of the night - our guests had circled around my husband and I while we were dancing, jumping and singing along to Journey. Someone yelled, “Best wedding EVER!” then everyone started cheering. It was such a great, silly, and love-filled moment to end our perfect day.
