About this venue

The historic Murphey School auditorium is the home of Raleigh's innovative Burning Coal Theatre Company. In 1960, the auditorium was the site of the vote to desegregate the City School System, so it is one of the most important and historic rooms in the city.

Historic theatre

Typically configured as a 'thrust theatre' with 100 seats downstairs and 40 on the balcony, the audience risers can be moved out of the room to create a wide open space for dinners or other events of that nature. We recommend no more than 150 for a seated dinner event.
