Under the new name of McKellar Ranch, their son, and our current owner, Farmer Bob McKellar, still farms the same citrus orchards that his father Hugh planted years and years ago. Spanning generations, the farm has been many things to many people. This place has been home to countless memories that have helped mold and shape lives. Rancho Corral de piedra was a 30,911-acre (125.09 km2) Mex­i­can land grant in present day San Luis Obispo County, Cal­i­for­nia con­sist­ing of two square leagues given in 1841 by Gov­er­nor Juan B. Alvarado to José María Villav­i­cen­cio, with an exten­sion of five square leagues given in 1846, by Gov­er­nor Pio Pico. It all started with Alice Jaeger - the legend at the heart of the our story. In 1929, while the Pacific Coast Highway was under initial construction, Alice began plans for a homestead haven to offer travelers a place to rest & refuel. Alice planted cacti & succulents by hand throughout the land. With her husband, Steve, a ranch-style home was built in 1936. It later became a diner + tiny inn; a gathering place for locals and wanderers to rest, refuel, and nourish with a homegrown meal. That ranch-home is what we call Big Sur Bakery today.
